Mobile Reception Indoors: Testing an Apartment Before Buying

Your phone may work well on the balcony but lose speech at the desk. A normal call may connect while video meetings repeatedly fail in the bedroom. Identify these differences before buying, particularly if mobile data must back up the home connection.

Test your own devices, connections and required tasks in each important room. A coverage map, seller's impression or signal bars on another phone cannot replace that assessment.

📱 Define what connectivity must do

List essential tasks: ordinary calls, messages, work video meetings, mobile data and a laptop hotspot. Household members may have different needs.

Separate primary and fallback use. A normally wired home still needs mobile testing for calls and a possible broadband failure. If mobile is intended as the only connection, assess longer and more varied use.

General connection options are covered in BuyHome's internet and mobile guide. The purpose here is testing the actual apartment interior.

Why a coverage map is not the full answer

A map helps shortlist locations but does not describe your experience beside the bed, behind an internal wall or at the back of the kitchen. UK regulator Ofcom identifies construction materials and glazing as influences on indoor signal. That is a general technical explanation, not an assessment of a particular Georgian building.

Do not assume higher floors are always better or new homes cannot have problems. A real observation at the point of use is more valuable for the purchase.

One brief visit has limitations too. Its result relates to the device, connection, position and time tested. Repeat the check when mobile connectivity is important.

Bring the future residents' devices

Use normal phones with active connections. If considering a different network, arrange legitimate access to a suitable connection rather than comparing other people's accounts of their service.

Record the handset, SIM or profile and selected voice and data line. With two lines, confirm which is under test. Do not automatically equate roaming with local service; establish conditions and the actual network used.

Check data allowance and known account restrictions. Operator-recommended settings or handset troubleshooting may be needed before a meaningful comparison. Avoid changing many parameters without a record, which makes results difficult to explain.

Separate cellular service from home Wi-Fi

Turn off Wi-Fi connectivity for mobile-data testing and confirm the intended cellular line. Otherwise, the seller's fast home connection can silently replace the test.

For ordinary calls, establish the mode being used, including any Wi-Fi calling. Test that separately where supported, but do not present a call through the home router as evidence of cellular reception.

Keep separate records for cellular and home-internet performance. If the fallback is intended for home-broadband failure, a feature relying on that same connection does not cover the scenario.

Repeat the same tasks room by room

Choose real positions: desk, bed, dining area, kitchen and hallway. The balcony is an additional location, not a replacement for testing indoors.

At each important point:

  1. Make an ordinary outgoing call to someone who agrees to help.
  2. Receive a call and assess speech in both directions.
  3. Open a familiar page using mobile data.
  4. Test a short video call where needed.
  5. If a laptop matters, test tethering and the actual task separately.

Do not record only whether a connection starts. Note lost words, conversational delays, drops and needing to move towards a window. Use neutral material rather than sensitive work files and account for data usage.

Use normal window and door positions

Compare normal living conditions, including closed windows and internal doors. A test only on an open balcony does not establish that bedroom working is practical in winter or rain.

In an unfurnished apartment, identify the desk position from the plan and retain that limitation in the notes. An empty-room result is not a guarantee following every future change.

Do not compensate through unsafe positions at windows or beyond railings. If service works only where ordinary sitting and conversation are impractical, record a restriction rather than a successful outcome.

📋 Build a room map rather than one overall score

Describe tasks and observations instead of applying an unverified numerical threshold for good reception.

Position Connection and device Call Data or video Limitation
Desk Identify Speech both ways Required task For example, drops
Bedroom Identify Incoming and outgoing If needed Repeat required
Kitchen Identify Normal conversation Page load Position-dependent
Hallway Identify Relevant tasks If needed None or describe
Balcony Identify Additional check Additional check Does not replace rooms

This is a record template, not findings for a property. Compare connections through the same tasks and positions. Explain when different phones are involved rather than mixing their results.

Repeat important scenarios at another time

For daily remote work, arrange a second visit at another ordinary time, such as evening. Record conditions to assess repeatability rather than the best isolated episode.

For speed measurements, save the service used, connection, location and time. Download and upload results describe that test but do not establish the stability of every call or working application.

Do not rank apartments through a single random number without a matching scenario. The relevant question is whether your task works without constant workarounds. Check a particular work service's current documentation for its own requirements.

Test the fallback without home broadband

With permission, perform the work task through mobile data without the home network. Confirm tethering restrictions, data allowances and what happens after the allowance is used.

If the fallback uses a separate router, test that device where it would operate. A phone working beside a window does not guarantee another device inside a cupboard.

Plan for different failures. Broadband loss, power loss and a broken phone are distinct situations. Do not call an arrangement a backup until you know which failures it covers and for how long.

Repeaters and Wi-Fi calling need their own checks

Do not buy on the assumption that any booster will solve the problem later. Establish technical suitability, lawful use in Georgia, installation permissions and actual performance on your connection.

Ask the operator to assess the issue and proposed options. Device rules described in UK or other foreign guidance cannot automatically be applied in Georgia.

Wi-Fi calling also depends on support from the operator, device and connection arrangements. Confirm operation separately if needed. It may be a useful part of a solution without demonstrating the underlying cellular signal.

Prepare a useful operator report

Record address and building, floor, handset, connection, dates, times, rooms and the observed fault. Explain whether service works outside and what changes by the window.

Attach relevant findings without unnecessary personal information. Request a case reference, next step and a way to verify the proposed remedy.

A promised network improvement is not a resolved issue. If connectivity is critical, repeat your own check following completed work before the purchase decision.

Frequently asked questions

Do strong bars on the seller's phone prove my service will work?

No. Another device and connection should not be transferred to your circumstances. Test your own required tasks.

Is one speed test sufficient?

No. Calls, video, the working position and fallback mode need separate checks.

Does good balcony reception resolve the problem?

Only if that arrangement genuinely suits you. Test rooms used in ordinary life.

✅ Before buying

List tasks, prevent Wi-Fi from replacing the test, check your devices throughout the apartment and repeat essential scenarios. Record restrictions and discuss problem areas with the operator before relying on an untested fix.

When searching with BuyHome, tell us if you work from home and need a mobile backup. This helps allow time and suitable conditions during viewings.
